Types of Fertilizers
Urea: Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CO(NH2)2. This amide has two –NH2 groups joined by a carbonyl (C=O) functional group. DAP: Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) is the world’s most widely used phosphorus fertilizer. It is made from two common constituents in the fertilizer industry – Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P). It is relatively high in nutrient content and its excellent physical properties make it a popular choice in farming and other industries.

NPK: The three numbers on fertilizer represents the value of the three macro-nutrients used by plants. These macro-nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) or NPK for short. The higher the number, the more concentrated the nutrient is in the fertilizer. For example, numbers on fertilizer listed as 20-5-5 have four times more nitrogen in it than phosphorus and potassium. A 20-20-20 fertilizer has twice as much concentration of all three nutrients than 10-10-10.

Seeds
Ensuring that farmers have access to affordable quality seeds and planting materials of the most suitable crop varieties is essential for improving food security and nutrition as well as the livelihoods of farming communities. In many developing countries, there is a lack of adequate seed policies – i.e. principles that guide government action and define the roles of stakeholders. The absence of such policies weakens countries’ capacity to provide smallholders with adequate access to quality seeds of the crops most suited to their farming systems, conditions, and needs. This Guide has been developed to assist governments in formulating policies that help create an enabling environment for seed sector development. The means for spurring seed sector growth in developing countries have evolved considerably over the last three decades. For instance, until the 1980s, national governments had a predominant role in the various components of the seed industry including variety development, seed multiplication, and extension services. Governments were, therefore, the main drivers for seed sector development. Since then, national agencies have largely disengaged from seed production. In some countries and for certain crops, this has led to the development of a dynamic private seed sector, but in many other countries the public seed sector has collapsed and no private sector has emerged to replace it. In fact, the seed industry of many developing countries cannot provide farmers with adequate access to quality seed, and the informal seed sector continues to be the main source of the seeds used by farmers.
